KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has been conferred the Brandlaureate Legendary Brand Icon Leadership Award for 2012 by the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation.
The award is in recognition of his outstanding leadership and enormous contributions to the state and country.
Taib led other Sarawakians, including Olympic bronze medallist Pandelela Rinong, who received awards for various categories during the gala dinner in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
A citation said Taib has been instrumental in navigating the growth of Sarawak with the implementation of innovative proposals and policies.
With the launching of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) in 2007, Sarawak is heading to an era of massive industrialisation, the implementation of a high income economy and balanced development within the nation towards the year 2020 and beyond.
“Under Pehin Sri Taib, Sarawak’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the past two decades has seen a steady growth and the state’s economy has expanded from primary commodities into manufacturing services, information technology, tourism, education and others,” said a press release issued by the Information Department.
Other Sarawakians being conferred awards were Encorp Berhad executive chairman Dato Sri Effendi Norwawi and SEGi University group managing director Datuk Seri Clement Hii, both of whom received the Great Entrepreneur award, while Pandelela and singer-songwriter Zee Avi received the Grand Master Brand Icon award.
Other national figures to receive Leadership Brands Icon awards included world number one badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Permodalan Nasional Berhad chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, Umno Women’s chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and former Chief Justice Tun Datuk Seri Zaki Tun Azmi.
