Sarawak needs more money from petroleum for development - Fadilah

“There is an urgent need for more funding for the improvement of both infrastructure development and closing the digital gap in Sarawak so that we can move in tandem with the rest of the country towards a high income economy.

“Without good infrastructure development such as roads, electricity and water supplies especially in the rural areas, the people in Sarawak would not be able to catch up with the rest of the country.”

Sarawak political leaders transcend political divide in calling for review on petroleum royalty for the state

KUCHING: State leaders from both sides of the political divide strike a common ground in calling for the federal government to review the five per cent petroleum royalty paid to Sarawak in the past four decades.

Minister of Land Development Tan Sri Dr James Masing said the proposed special committee to be set up by the federal government to look into the petroleum royalties to the East Coast states should include Sarawak and Sabah.

“Since Sarawak and Sabah are the main contributors to the national petroleum production, both states’ royalties of five per cent should therefore be reviewed and revised,” Masing told the Borneo Post here yesterday.

KUCHING: Assemblyman’s figure of 100,000 Dayaks working outside Sarawak illogical — CM.

A claim by Wong Ho Leng (DAP-Bukit Assek) that 100,000 Dayaks had migrated to the peninsula to work irked Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, prompting him to ask the opposition leader to substantiate his figure.

Responding to Wong’s debate in the 17th DUN sitting, Taib (BN-Balingian) who was delivering his winding up speech challenged Wong to get his facts correct and admit his mistake.

‘2012 Budget made based on thorough study of country’s needs’

KUCHING: The 2012 Budget of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government is made based on a thorough study on the needs of the country.

PBB Youth economic bureau chief, Pandi Suhaili, said the budget was not something which any government, including Malaysia, could take lightly when preparing it.

“The government has received many feedbacks from many quarters when preparing the budget. After that, the government, with the help of many experts, has to make thorough assessment on all information it received to ensure that the budget would achieve its aims — to boost the country’s economy and the people’s wellbeing.

“The process of preparing a budget is really painstaking and it is not something which any prime minister of any democratically elected goverment can do at their whims,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He was referring to statements made by the DAP state chairman Richard Wong Ho Leng and the party’s Miri’s legal aid bureau chief Chang Choon Yee last Saturday. Both were skeptical of the budget.
