BINTULU: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is confident that Sarawak will be able to achieve a per capita income of US$15,000 by 2015.

He said the projects in Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) particularly in Samalaju in Bintulu would provide vast growth opportunities and boost the state’s income to a new high after 2020.

Thus it was important that other components of SCORE such as the Halal Hub take off and be developed as planned, he said.
He said this when officiating at the ground breaking ceremony of Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd’s manganese and silicon smelting plant at Samalaju Industrial Park here yesterday.

“SCORE is not limited to investment in Samalaju but it will have a holistic impact.

“For small industries and enterprises, many other business opportunities will arise. The new town will be the biggest opportunity for many people to get involved,” he said.

He added that SCORE should be looked at as a whole and not as individual industries.

“The immediate effect will be to spur a very aggressive education industry.

“The works have been assembled at the moment to ensure the educational facilities will be launched within two years,” Taib disclosed.

He said this would enable the young generation to be focused on technical training unlike in the past when industries in Sarawak were relatively focused on a narrow band of technologies compared to Peninsular Malaysia, and which now required a very wide spectrum of technical skills.

The function was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, AML & Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn Bhd chairman Hirotaka Suzuki, former Japanese senior vice minister of Foreign Affairs and Senator Tetsuro Yano, Japanese ambassador Shigeru Nakamura, assistant ministers and senior head of government departments.
