BN win saved state from chaos — Pandi

Posted on May 7, 2011, Saturday

KUCHING: Sarawak should consider itself lucky that Barisan Nasional (BN) had managed to thwart Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) aggressive campaigns by retaining power after the just-concluded election.

PBB vice Youth chief Pandi Suhaili said this was because barely a month after the opposition group won some seats in the election, its leaders were already at loggerheads.

“Sarawakians should be grateful that BN managed to win the election because if the opposition did win, it is certain to be chaos in the state.

“They could not even agree on the shadow cabinet line-up and what more to say when they are the government,” said Pandi when contacted yesterday.

He said the opposition parties’ disagreement over the shadow cabinet lineup clearly confirmed his assertion in the past that they were actually only interested in obtaining power and not fight for the interest of the rakyat.

“It is really sad to see some of us falling for the opposition’s sweet talks to give votes to them under the pretext that they were fighting for the rakyat.

“However, all of us, including those who believed that the opposition parties were their saviours, can see now that they are at loggerheads on who should be in the shadow cabinet line-up,” he said.

Pandi also said the decision by DAP to ‘demote’ Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) state liaison chief Baru Bian to merely a shadow minister has unmasked its dishonesty towards fellow colleagues.

He pointed out that before the election, many were under the impression that there was an understanding between all opposition parties that Baru would be appointed as the chief minister should they win the election, regardless of the number of seats won by PKR.

“However, instead of ‘appointing’ Baru as the Opposition Chief to uphold the spirit of the ‘perceived’ understanding, he is being ‘demoted’ to a shadow minister post by DAP,” he said, adding that PKR supporters should blame themselves for allowing this to happen by giving their votes to DAP in the last election.

The vice Youth chief also said the state was fortunate that PKR only managed to win three seats in the last election, saying Sarawak was certain to be under the control of PKR leaders from KL should the opposition win the election.

“The KL leaders are now even interfering in the formation of the shadow cabinet by not giving total freedom to Baru to decide on the matter.

“It is not a surprise if Baru becomes the CM – he has to contact KL leaders from time to time whenever he has to make important decisions for Sarawak,” he said, adding he could understand the frustration experienced by the local DAP leaders on the interference from PKR KL leaders on the shadow cabinet.

Pandi also chided Baru for claiming that PKR would be representing the Bumiputeras in the State Legislative Assembly when it had always claimed that it represented the interest of all races.

“Supporters of PKR should ask themselves what sort of party they are supporting now because before the election, PKR was a party for all but now after the election, it is a party representing Bumiputeras,” he said, adding he pitied those who thought that PKR was a God-sent saviour for them.
