LUNDU: The only way to show appreciation for the development brought to their areas was to continually give support to Barisan Nasional (BN), the people were told yesterday.

In pointing this out, Santubong MP Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said BN had made it its responsibility to entertain all requests from the people as it cared for the people’s wellbeing, especially those in the rural areas.

He said this when launching the gravity water system for Kampung Sungai Limo, here yesterday.

Pergerakkan Pemuda PBB Sarawak berharap ini akan menjadi pengajaran kepada mana-mana pihak agar tidak berbuat sedemikian Ketua Menteri Sarawak Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud ataupun mana-mana pemimpin PBB.

KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday received an unqualified apology from online news portal, Malaysiakini and its editor in chief Gan Diong Keng for libellous words published in a series of twelve articles published by Malaysiakini from April 6 to May 3, 2007.

In a suit filed in May 2007 in the Kuala Lumpur High Court, Taib sought an apology, unspecified amount of damages and injunction against Malaysiakini and Gan, for publishing allegations attributed to the Japan Times, a Japanese newspaper, that the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau had decided that payments made by Japanese shipping companies to a Hong Kong based company, Regent Star, were illegal payments.

Malaysiakini alleged in their articles that these payments were ‘kickbacks’ for Taib for timber exports from Sarawak to Japan.

KUCHING: Assemblyman’s figure of 100,000 Dayaks working outside Sarawak illogical — CM.

A claim by Wong Ho Leng (DAP-Bukit Assek) that 100,000 Dayaks had migrated to the peninsula to work irked Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, prompting him to ask the opposition leader to substantiate his figure.

Responding to Wong’s debate in the 17th DUN sitting, Taib (BN-Balingian) who was delivering his winding up speech challenged Wong to get his facts correct and admit his mistake.

BINTULU: Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip says his constituents in Jepak are always in his mind even though his work as a cabinet minister does not allow him to make regular visits.

“I used to visit every week, and sometimes twice a week whenever I had time but due to the increase of workload and responsibility in the government now, I have to reschedule my timetable accordingly,” he told the people when officiating at the ‘Khatamal Quran and mass circumcision’ ceremony at SK Jepak here yesterday.

He said the irregular visit of late did not mean that he had forgotten the people.

In his speech earlier, he reminded Muslims in his constituency to read the Quran regularly, understand its teaching and practise (teaching) them in their daily lives.

He said that Muslims who practise the teaching of the holy book were a special breed of people in society.

KUCHING: The 2012 Budget of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government is made based on a thorough study on the needs of the country.

PBB Youth economic bureau chief, Pandi Suhaili, said the budget was not something which any government, including Malaysia, could take lightly when preparing it.

“The government has received many feedbacks from many quarters when preparing the budget. After that, the government, with the help of many experts, has to make thorough assessment on all information it received to ensure that the budget would achieve its aims — to boost the country’s economy and the people’s wellbeing.

“The process of preparing a budget is really painstaking and it is not something which any prime minister of any democratically elected goverment can do at their whims,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He was referring to statements made by the DAP state chairman Richard Wong Ho Leng and the party’s Miri’s legal aid bureau chief Chang Choon Yee last Saturday. Both were skeptical of the budget.

friendly budget that aims to improve the welfare of the rakyat.

He pointed out that the government’s decision to allocate a sum of RM33.2 billion as subsidies and incentives shows that the government always cares for the rakyat.

“Many will be glad to hear about this because without government’s subsidies, some items are going to be really expensive for the rakyat,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He added the decision also brushed aside the fear among the rakyat that the government will do away with subsidies as a way to reduce the government’s spending.

KUCHING: People’s Progressive Party (PPP) should come clean on its decision to spread its wings to Sarawak before offering its ‘sincere’ assistance to the State Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming general election.

PBB youth vice chief Pandi Suhaili pointed out that so far the explanations provided by the party leaders were non-satisfactory.

“In the past the party said it had to come to Sarawak because of requests made by few hundred Sarawakians.

“It is not a good argument because those who wanted to bring in Umno claimed to have ten thousand Sarawakians behind their efforts but still Umno didn’t want to come in as the party respected the local parties in the state.

“To us in the PBB Youth, when PPP decided not to emulate Umno in respecting the spirit of Barisan Nasional, it showed us that the party had an ulterior motive of coming over here,” he said when contacted yesterday.

KUCHING: PBB Youth Bureau Economy chief Pandi Suhaili welcomes the disclosure made by the Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim that the government has taken steps to address the shortage of chicken in the market.

He said many consumers experienced relief with the disclosure because the average price of chicken currently hovers between RM8.50 and RM9.50 per kg, which is costly.

“We hope that the ministry can act fast to normalise market price with steps that would address the matter,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He also hoped that the rakyat would be patient as the government is now making serious efforts to bring down the price for the benefit of the people in Sarawak.

“As usual the oppositions will be quick to blame the increase of the price of chicken on the government.
