Gathering of information related to claims made by the London-based NGO ongoing

KUCHING: The state government may take legal action against Global Witness with regards to the recently published ‘corruption’ video linking Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

The chief minister said yesterday that the government was still accumulating information on the claims made by the London-based human rights NGO.

“I am still trying to find out what’s going on. I don’t know what level of investigation and actions these claims merit. It is quite obvious that they are not really fighting for what their actual causes are.

“They (Global Witness) are just supporting the Opposition considering that the 13th general election is very near. Nobody can deny this,” he told reporters when met after officiating at the opening of the over RM1 million Kampung Lintang multipurpose hall near here.

The video clip recorded by a hidden camera shows two women, who claimed to be the cousins of Taib, discussing the sale of 5,000 hectares of plantation land owned by their company. The women said they were daughters of Taib’s predecessor Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, who is Taib’s uncle.

The clear recording also showed negotiations between the undercover `investor’ and two local lawyers, one representing a prominent businessman for another land deal.

Taib reiterated his earlier assertion that the allegations were aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

“I have replied to this allegation. Anybody can say that I have agents to do something, but that doesn’t mean this claims can be used against me. Anybody can make such confessions.

“They would say, ‘I act for you’ but if you don’t know about this what can you do? People should be careful not to be withdrawn into that position, conned into believing that they can do something through agents as claimed,” stressed Taib.

He said he never allowed anyone to be his intermediary on sale of state land and logging licences.

“We have a system here and we stick to (government) regulations and procedures.”

    1. No one is immortable.Everybody will definitely die.Aging or young doesn't matter.

Not nice to demean an old man, more so a Chief Minister legally elected by the people.Even if u don't agree with CM's policies do not stoop low by attacking his private life.Like u CM also deserves his privacy.

Orang yg berdedam selalunya tak hidup bahagia.Negative attitude towards anything good around us will make us no more better than yesterday.See the good sides of things. Why pick a bad choice among the many good things that the govt has brought about. Can't u see the well-being of our rural population for the last 50 years or so? Better roads, electricity, clean water, govt subsidies on sugar,petrol/diesel,cooking oil, free text books for our kids, free primary n secondary education,BR1M 1 n 2.0,and the list goes on.These are the fruits we are enjoying now.

Undoubtedly, there're slow development in certain areas, poor planning here n there as we progress. But the BN govt under Tan Sri Taib is doing its best to rectify whatever shortcomings are n to deliver the best it could for every one of us.

U may not appreciate what BN has done. But,I'm certain u can't deny all the good things u enjoy now is the result of BN's untiring effort to give a better future for all of us.
