Kenyataan Naib Ketua Pemuda PBB Sarawak Pandi Suhaili - 21 Ogos 2012

Kenyataan Naib Ketua Pemuda PBB Sarawak Pandi Suhaili
21hb Ogos 2012
(merujuk kepada
- The Borneo Post)

Sekian. Terimakasih.

KUCHING: Crime rate in the country has indeed decreased despite claims by opposition parties that the police are down playing incidences of crime in the country and giving inaccurate statistics to the public, said Kuching police chief ACP Roslan Bek.

“We speak with facts, while they speak with assumptions. Yet they said we purposely make such statements to make things appear less serious,” he said to reporters at his Open House on Sunday.

Roslan said he had no idea what statistics the opposition used to refute the figures released by the police.

“What they have is certainly not accurate. We have the black and white facts, following proper procedures.

“We are not saying there are no crimes at all. There are crimes everywhere but there is a decrease in number. Of course, if there is decrease we tell people there is decrease,” he stressed.

He said in order to combat the public’s perception that crimes were on the rise in the country the police would engage the people more in their fight against crimes.

“We will go down to the field to educate the public and we will continue to get help from the people as well as the media,” he said.

Chong questions declining crime rate statistics
Posted on August 18, 2012, Saturday

KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen yesterday raised doubts over the latest statistics showing declining crime rate in this country.

He made this assessment based on Thursday’s news reports which quoted Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein as saying that several crime prevention initiatives would be reviewed and strengthened beginning next month.

“We have seen as early as last month, our Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar was saying the crime rate was down by 10 per cent.

“Even the Kuching police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad was saying the crime rate was declining.

“Statically, it’s a beautiful picture. But based on what Hishammuddin said, it shows the situation is getting worse,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Chong, who is also DAP Sarawak secretary, also poured cold water on the claims made by government that the per capita income of the people had increased in the last two years.

He claimed that the government had been playing around with the statistics just to paint a rosy picture.

“Security and incomes are matters which are of great concern to the public. But, crime is getting worse and income has not increased,” he said.
