Fadillah: It’s all part of growing up

KUCHING: The incident of university students making so-called derogatory statements about Sarawak on national TV should not be allowed to drag on, said Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Fadillah Yusof yesterday.

He said although the statements were insulting and inflamed many nerves, people should realise that it was part of a learning process for the students.

“These are students, so we cannot assume they know everything even though they are at the tertiary level.

“TV programmes like RTM’s Bicara Kampus is actually a good programme that provides learning opportunities for university students, bringing them together for an intellectual discourse on various topics.

“I hope Sarawakians will see such programme as a good platform for students to be exposed to reality,” he said to reporters after closing an educational workshop at the State Library yesterday.

Fadillah, who is also state BN and PBB Youth chief, pointed out that by making mistakes, the students would learn to be better leaders in the future.

“It should be a lesson to them, that when they made statements that are wrong or misguided they will receive criticisms that can be very harsh. That is part of reality.

“They must understand that if they are leaders and they make the wrong kind of statements, they will get all kinds of criticisms and condemnations from the society. So in order to prevent that, they must learn from their mistakes.

“This is also a part of democracy. Everyone is free to express their opinions, but they must be responsible for every word.”

Fadillah urged Sarawakians not to get carried away by negative sentiments that could be detrimental to the learning spirit and also the country’s well-being in the long run.

“It is important to educate these students by giving constructive feedback and encouragement to make sure that they will not repeat their mistakes.”

The controversy started after a Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) undergraduate Md Yusri Hidrus made comments deemed as demeaning and degrading against Sarawak when he was panelist at the TV1’s Bicara Kampus.programme.

PBB Youth vice chief Pandi Suhaili even pledged to initiate a police report against Md Yusri if no apology was made by him.
