SIBU: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said it would be a loss to the nation and the people if “we lose the continuity of the good government in the form of Barisan Nasional government.”
He said if that were to happen the future would be more difficult and a stronger government would be needed to bring transformation to the country and changes for the people.
“There is no political newcomer that can produce miracle to say they can do better than Barisan Nasional government which has run the country so well for more than 50 years,” he said when addressing at the earth-breaking ceremony for University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) performed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak here yesterday.
He said it was pointless to shout for change if that change created chaos and did not bring any benefit to the people.
“We have a country that is giving everybody a chance to be better and that’s more important for change. And not only change but change for the better.”
On the establishment of UCTS, he said it was proof of continuous support from the federal government to transform Sarawak, especially the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).
He said this was demonstrated by the premier’s frequent visit to the state, which showed that he understood the people’s aspiration, and the building of UCTS which would definitely have far-reaching impact on the state.
The nation was now undergoing an economic development transformation process which required the people to possess knowledge and skills, he said, adding that with the existence of the university, local children would have the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge to help spur the development process in remote areas.
“In 30 years to come, our children will be able to obtain income up to RM3,000 and now is a starting step,” he said.
Even though Najib had been prime minister for only about three years, he had expedited the setting up of UCTS because of his desire to see the people of Sarawak continue to develop, Taib said.
He said the nation was doing very well, noting that people from diverse cultural backgrounds, religions and races were able to work together for the betterment of everybody.
“What is more imperative is that we need more economy so that we can progress at a fast rate. I can tell you one thing. Are we enjoying a lot of economy for without that other projects would not be implemented that fast. I do not know how much progress I have made.
“But I think over the 50 years, we have the first per capita income increased to 15 times. If Sarawak is neglected as some people claimed, I don’t think we could achieve that kind of progress.
“Now, we are on the verge of implementing the modernisation of Sarawak to the extent that we change our economy to a developed economy structure and that will bring about not only economic changes, it requires the commission of the people themselves. And that’s the hardest thing to achieve.
“Because it involves every one of us, the parents, the children, the people in power and the people in the ulu,” he said further.
Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Taib’s wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Nordeen, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, Second Resource Planning and Environment Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah were among those present.
