KUCHING: A peaceful demonstration was held here yesterday to protest against an anti-Islam film and satirical cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in a French magazine.

Led by former senator Datuk Idris Buang, a large group congregated at the Kuching Division Mosque at Jalan Masjid following Friday prayers before making their way towards the Central police station to lodge a report over the film ‘Innocence of Muslims’ and caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad published in French magazine Chart.

The group also lodged a second report against Perak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Ngeh Koo Ham over his Twitter post regarding the controversial film, which was deemed as provocative.

Idris said the demonstration was themed ‘We Love Muhammad (peace be upon him)’, and that similar events are planned for other parts of the state.

“We urge Google, YouTube and all public domains to remove all offending videos and caricatures which belittles any faith, religion or beliefs.

“I will be forwarding an appeal to Google and YouTube as soon as possible over this matter, as well as write to the US embassy and also the United Nations to register our feelings towards the film and cartoons which insult the Prophet Muhammad and Islam,” he said.

Idris added he was pleased by the response of the demonstration, which he stressed was non-political, and that some 3,000 had congregated at the mosque to show their support.

Police were on hand to monitor the situation and control the flow of traffic as the group made their way to the police station before peacefully dispersing around 2.30pm.
